Extreme heat inside the tape drive can deteriorate the metal particle’s magnetic properties. The metal particles are protected from extreme heat by the “ceramic armor” technology used in the Maxell DDS tape cartridges. Ceramic armor preserves and protects the metal particles and their magnetic properties. Head scanning usually high speed can damage the metal particles and for their protection, protective layer is used in Maxell DDS tape format that contributes in enhancement of its stability and toughness.

Initially there were problems of oxidation and issues related to prevention of DAT audio media of low grade to be utilized inadvertently for storing vital data files. DAT cassettes (audio grade) physically support and are compatible with media (DDS qualified). The prevention of customers to use media of inferior grade (to save money) for applications of data grade led to the development of “media recognition system” in the DDS tape format. Media recognition system embeds data tape leader’s stripe sections which the tape drive identifies as certified tape media for storage of digital data. Operations of data writing will be enabled by the DDS media recognition system tape drives that identify the media of MRS. The DDS data tapes become read only without the media recognition system stripes.

Improvements and advancements have been made in metal particle formulation of Maxell DDS media in order to support high-recording densities. The size of the magnetic particles has been reduced as well as higher coercivity has been achieved in different advanced generations of Maxell DDS technology. The higher coercivity and reduction of size of the metal particles have contributed to the increased recording capacity (40 times more). Evolving tape media of DDS from 2GB (first generation) products to the 6th generation DAT-160 (80GB) resulted from the consistent advancements in formulation of MP, enhanced base film and thinner tape media. Data tapes of longer length were used in DDS1 tape media for extending the capacity. Data tapes (60 meter) were used in DDS-1 tape format that had capacity of 1.3 GB. Afterwards 90 meters tape was used to upgrade the capacity of DDS-1 to 2GB and no changes were made to the recording technology and the tape formulation.

Capacity was doubled in the Maxell DDS-2 tape format (4GB). In Maxell DDS2, new formulation of MP+ with more coercivity was introduced along with 120 meters of tape media. Tape was to be made even thinner for reaching media of 120 meters. Therefore the thickness of Maxell DDS2 media was lowered to 6.9µm and that of DDS1 was 90µm. The evolution of the Maxell DDS-3 tape technology was a great jump in the DDS tape format’s history with three times more capacity than the previous version of DDS. 12GB capacity of Maxell DDS3 format was result of two improvements in key media. First improvement was MP+ formulation with higher version of coercivity than DDS2 media and increase in the length of media to 125 meters. The linear bit density was also increased to 122 KB pi with the help of MP++ tape media. There was also made significant enhancement in the non media technology of Maxell DDS-3 technology. Its capacity was further increased by the channel reading technology of PRML (partial response maximum likelihood). That is why the Maxell DDS3 tape technology is more durable, enduring, resilient and efficient.
