Digital linear Tape was derived form TK-70 & TK-50 half inch cartridges that were developed by Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC). Afterwards Quantum took over the development & production of DEC tape in the year 1994. The TZ-30/TZ-50 had capacity of 100MB which now has been increased to 800GB in the DLT-S4 tape format. The target of the Super DLT tape format was the storage market of high-end server. The most powerful and high speed addition in the range of DLT tape technology is the DLT-S4 with 1.6 TB compressed capacity. Recording mechanism of the DLT is serpentine linear.
