Fuji used the technology of die coating in mid 1930’s to coat photographic films and motion pictures. In 1960 the technology of multi-coating was introduced. Also in that same year, Fuji began to manufacture its first products of magnetic tapes. Five years after that, Fuji developed the computer tape. In the year 1977, Fujifilm introduced eight inch floppy discs. Magnetic media (dual coated) was manufactured by Fuji in 1989. Afterwards the dual coated ATOMM media was introduced by the company in 1992. In ATOMM technology, two unique and separate layers are applied simultaneously by special head for die-coating. One of the layers is non-magnetic and the other is magnetic. This technology of dual coating enables the Fuji to produce the data storage product’s next generation with greater capacity for storage of information.

In market of open systems, all the four generations of the LTO tape format are very successful and efficient in their performance and output. Along with the other successive attributes of LTO, the major factor for the LTO tape technology’s success is its products nature (non proprietary). The investment made by the users in the LTO technology is safe and protected as they have the option of interchangeable data media and tape drives made by different manufacturers.

LTO backup tape technology is more cost effective than the SATA disk. LTO format efficiently preserves the company’s data and makes it readily available whenever required. The LTO data cartridges have memory whose function is to hold the information of the ID of tape cartridge, metadata and the history of usage. This cartridge memory is non volatile and the information is recorded on the RF passive interface (non contact). The LTO-4 tape cartridges have memory of 8KB while the LTO-1, LTO-2 and LTO-3 tape cartridges have 4KB memory chip. As the drives of ultrium-4 can read & write the ultrium-3 cartridges, so the additional cost of the enterprise is saved and hence the investment made by the company is also protected. When the LTO-3 cartridge is utilized, the tape drive of LTO-4 will read and write the data onto the tape cartridge same as the LTO-3 tape drive does. And when the LTO4 tape cartridge is utilized in the LTO4 tape drive, then it will write & read 800GB data onto the data cartridge with native speed of 120MB/sec.

LTO3 was one of the first versions of the LTO tape media format in which the WORM technology was added. The benefit of the WORM mechanism is that the data cannot be modified once it has been written onto the tape cartridge. WORM technology provides to the users safe storage & backup of valuable information in format that is non-rewritable and cannot be erased. The ability is included in the specification of LTO technology that the media (both non-WORM and WORM) can work in WORM enabled tape drives of LTO. Backup solutions of LTO are cost effective as it stores the valuable information in format of non-erasable and non-rewritable.

Fuji has allocated different unique colors to its LTO tape cartridges for their better identification by the users. Color of Fuji LTO-1 tape cartridge is black, LTO ultrium-2 purple, LTO-3 slate-blue, LTO3 WORM Platinum/slate-blue, LTO4 grayish green and LTO-4 WORM has Platinum/green color.
