The DAT (Digital Audio Tape) acronym was established to consider the 3.81mm based recording technology that used 0.15 inch tape in recorder using helical scan mechanism. There are more tracks per inch in DAT tape format as that of the 8mm technology. In order to enable the DAT drives to store data reliably, the Digital Data storage (DDS) technology was introduced by Sony and HP Hewlett-Packard. Because of its outstanding performance, reliability, higher output and capacity, DDS is now known as the world standard in the category of backup tape technology.

Fuji has introduced advanced technology of “ATOMM” in its DDS-3 and DDS-4 tape cartridges which has enhanced their recording density and performance as well. This has resulted in a new enhanced version of DAT-72 compliant. These robust Fuji data tapes are metal coated with capacity to record 72GB data (compressed). Double coating is done in these Fuji DDS data tapes.

ATOMM technology consists of a magnetic layer that is very thin which helps to improve the digital characteristics. The top layer has Metallic magnetic particles whose thickness is approximately 0.1µm to 0.5µm. This coating is done on a fine layer of titanium (non magnetic) which is ideal to get high recording density.

ATOMM Technology improves the output, robustness and efficiency of Fuji DDS tape format. This double structure of layer with non magnetic layer of titanium at bottom with on top the magnetic layer enables the bottom layer of the tape to behave as a lubricant reservoir. So, the Fuji DDS data tapes can work with greater reliability. So in this way the upper magnetic layer is all the times supplied adequate lubricant which ensures superior reliability and output. The head can not properly get in contact with the tape is the tape’s surface is not even. The loss of space ends up with lower output.

The ATOMM technology makes the tape surface of Fuji DDS3 & DDS-4 data tapes even more smother and improves the contact of tape and head for consistent high performance. Fuji DDS-4 tape format has huge capacity to record uncompressed data of 20GB. The yield strength of the Fuji DDS4’s tape is higher and thinner at the same time with which the tape in the data cartridge is also increased ensuring durability. The finer particle play important role in increasing the recording density. The other factors that contribute in enhancing reliability of the Fuji DDS4 tape technology is 4-S. These are “Symmetric Slider Spring Structure”. The slide section is redesigned and is highly rigid. The 4-S makes the movement of the slider section smoother. All these innovative technologies help archiving in long term.

Fuji DDS-4 tape cartridge is tough, rigid and the advanced features make its working life longer. The combination of lubricating system and 3-D network structure provide exceptional performance and durability. Error rate of Fuji DDS-4 tape format is extremely low and the efficiency of output is very high. Its super calendaring mechanism and tape’s smooth base provide a mirror finish to the magnetic layer that helps to lower the spacing loss. Spacing loss is the major factor that creates errors. As the spacing loss is low in the Fuji DDS-4 tape format, so this eliminates the chances of errors.
