The AIT (advanced intelligent tape) tape format was created by Sony in 1996 and since then it has been leading backup tape technology providing its users best and cost effective solutions. The 2nd generation of the AIT technology includes the Mammoth-2 & AIT-2 tape formats. Sony AIT has the new reliable technology of AME that gives ability to respond to high frequency, recording layer of pure metal, smooth tape surface, robustness, high recording density, reliability and fast data access.

The recording media of AIT tape format’s error rate is low and the output is high with very low noise. For the purpose of rapid access, AIT format has the MIC (memory in cassette) that is built in the tape cartridge. The AME data tape has coating of DLC (diamond like carbon) which is about twenty times stronger, robust and tougher in comparison to the oxidation layer. The DLC coating enhances the overall durability of the AIT tape cartridge and resistance to abrasion.

The innovative technologies of AIT backup tape format offer data storage solutions that are high speed, reliable and save the cost. AIT technology can provide backup for the network servers of large scale, accommodate images of huge volumes and applications with high duty cycle. The capacities for data recording in the AIT2 tape cartridges have been increased by 100% as that of its first generation. AIT 2 tape format has the capability to provide data backup of 100GB in less than 2˝ hours.

AIT2 tape drives are backward compatible with the 1st generation of AIT tape format. Previous versions of ME (metal evaporated) data tapes utilized single layer of metal evaporated grain. AME data tape of AIT has double coat that requires second trip in vacuum chamber. Therefore, the output increases 5dB. The other advantageous feature of the AIT tape is that the cartridge has “MIC memory in cassette”. MIC is a memory chip of sixteen kilobytes, whose function is to store the locations of files and table of contents of the AIT data cartridge. For reading table of contents, the conventional tape cartridges have to rewind to the start of the tape.

With help of the MIC feature in AIT tape technology, average seek-time is cut in half. For HSM (Hierarchical Storage Management) and near line data storage, the AIT tape format has become valuable due to its reduced load time. In order to achieve the desired recording capacities of Mammoth & AIT, the AME technology was selected due to its ability to deliver enough tape length and bandwidth in the data tape cartridge.

Mammoth and AIT data tape formats evolved from D-8 format which uses media of metal particle. When we compare metal particle data tapes and AME tapes, we find that the uncompressed storage capacity of one D-8 metal cartridges is up to 7GB and that of the AIT tape cartridge is 25GB. The Advanced intelligent tape uses tape width of 8mm for native capacity of 25GB and transfer speed of 3MB/sec which is considered ideal for video on demand, video editing and network backup of large volume. Both Mammoth and AIT tape systems are very much similar as far as the data recording capacity. AIT & Mammoth cartridges look alike but the main difference is that AIT has memory chip while the Mammoth dose not have it.
